I am a lifelong working artist who has studied under George Morrison, David Feinberg, Raymond Hendler, Tom Busa and others at the University of Minnesota. These artists helped shape my art making process. I have been in solo and group shows, my first solo show was 1976 and I was included in MIA 2020 “Foot in the Door” and I had solo show “Undersea World of Larry Weinberg” in 2022. My painting can best be described as how I see the world through color, texture, lines and relationships within various cultures. I founded the Rumriver Art Center with my wife Susan Yee in 2009 and stepped down as the Executive Director 2024.
My newest project is “Visions from the World”, which began 2018 in Isla Mujeres Mexico. Visions of the World is made up of paintings completed at various locations around the world. I also included a series of 2024 paintings of my 14 year old Shar Pei Buddy. My Artistic goals are to push the boundaries of the relationship of color to the environment through the use of high flow acrylic on paper or surfaces. These paintings will be part of my 2024 solo gallery at the Jan Johansen Gallery in the Rumriver Art Center.
I chose grounds and high flow acrylics on 300 lb paper as my main medium. I carry my sketchbook to capture the local flavors. I rent places where I have an outdoor space to create. The last series of paintings I did are from landscapes of Andalusia Spain, underwater paintings from Isla Mujeres, harbor life from Margot St Martin. My artwork focuses on how the process creates the vision of the environment. I capture visions of the world around me, influenced by light, sounds, smells and textures of the environment. I work with local artists on my process of laying down layers and letting the relationships develop.
Another of my artistic goals is to share my art making process with local artists through workshops. We discuss how to immerse yourself into an environment using sketches and reference materials as a starting point and creating a schedule of painting/sketching every day, with walking and wandering the environment.
